THE CENTENNIAL celebration of a prominent Chinese school has created chaotic traffic jam along downtown Iloilo City.

Iloilo Central Commercial High School (ICCHS) or Huasiong, which is set to celebrate its centennial founding anniversary on February 25, irked many Ilonggos as major streets have been closed to vehicular traffic since Wednesday.

“The road closure for an activity of a school is a very stupid idea that the city government allowed.  Sobra pa ini sa Dinagyang!” said a businessman who wants to remain anonymous.

“Why can’t they do it privately? It’s a private affair anyway,” the businessman added explaining that school officials and alumni could have chosen to hold their activities inside their school campus, which is located on Iznart St.

A very visible blockage is the stage being constructed at Plazoleta Gay, which serves as intersection point for JM Basa, Iznart, and Quezon streets.

The city government allowed the closure of portions of Fermin Caram Ave., JM Basa St., Delgado St., Solis St., Arroyo St., and Aldeguer St. while portions of Solis and Aldeguer have been declared as one-way streets.

Affected jeepney routes include Jaro CPU, Jaro CPU Ungka, Jaro Liko NFA, La Paz, SM City Proper, Baluarte Molo, Bo. Obrero, and Lapuz.

Powerful Alumni

Huasiong, which was established by the Filipino Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Iloilo Inc., boasts of big-name alumni.

Among the school’s notable alumni are basketball star James Yap, Mang Inasal founder Edgar “Injap” Sia II, singer Jose Mari Chan, and numerous business and civic leaders of Iloilo.
