MORE THAN 32,000 firearms in Western Visayas have expired licenses based on the report of Police Regional Office 6 (PRO6) Firearms and Explosives Unit (FEU).
The report showed that 28,978 expired licenses are for individual firearms and 3,329 for juridical firearms.
The owners of these firearms were already reminded to apply for renewal.
C/Supt. Cipriano E. Querol, Jr., director of PRO6, said a letter was sent to individual owners reminding them to renew their licenses or to submit a report as regards to the status of their firearms.
He said many of the gun owners may not have renewed their firearm licenses probably because they have lost the firearms or donated the same to other persons. There should be a report to support their allegations.
PRO6 targets at least three per cent of the total expired licenses for renewal every month.
Firearms with expired licenses are considered loose firearms; thus, owners of these firearms may be held liable for violation of PD 1866.
Iloilo province has 7,404 expired licenses; Bacolod City 6,699; Negros Occ. 5,833; Iloilo City 4,357; Capiz 2,931; Aklan 2,062; Antique 1,532 and Guimaras 489.
A police unit may apply for a search warrant to recover the firearms with expired licenses from their owners. (Francisco Lindero, Jr.)
