CUARTERO, Capiz – A bigger production of 140 cavans per hectare, resistance to bacterial leaf blight, better absorption of fertilizer and good eating quality were some of the proven experiences of 19 farmer-cooperators of 16-hectare compact hybrid rice techno demo project at Barangay Bon-ud recently.
Alejandro Flores, 70-year-old farmer cooperator, said that hybrid rice seeds produced 25 to 32 tillers per hill given the right fertilizer, water management and proper distance.
Meanwhile, Mayor Roger F. Flores said the compact hybrid rice techno demo truly showcases the potential of hybrid rice among all rice farmers located around Barangay Bun-od.
He advised the farmers to plant hybrid rice during second cropping season to avoid adverse effect of climate change, pest and diseases outbreaks and water shortage.
Aside from hybrid rice techno demo project, Cuartero is also a recipient of P1- million community participatory action research (CPAR) of the Department of Agriculture and various production and postharvest machineries.
Manuel O. Olanday, regional Agri-Pinoy rice action officer, said farmers should master the A to Z of hybrid rice production and the conduct of compact hybrid rice techno demo was an excellent venue to learn and experience the technology.
Olanday challenged the farmers to strengthen their association/organizations in order to access farm mechanization and post harvest interventions of the DA such as hand tractor, thresher, harvester, dryers and rice mills.
